What are the method and techniques in Offset Printing?

Offset printing also called as offset lithography printing is the highest valuable flat printing technique involved. It is a large scale printing technique which includes the ink from metal plate to be transferred to the rubber blankets and then to the printing media. The paper on which it’s printed doesn’t come in direct contact with metal plate; it’s the rubber blanket that readily imprints into the rough print media surface.

Lithography is the principle of repulsion of oil and water. This is the basic technique used in offset printing, where greasy ink sticks to the printing areas and hot water to the nonprinting areas which results in rejection of the ink. The metal plate used in the technique is usually made of zinc or aluminium with surface coated with photosensitive materials.  This type of printing is good for printing business cards, brochures, pamphlets, booklet, letterheads, flyers etc. There are many offset printing services in Pune that are very much popular in printing flyers and brochures. Many of the booklets and weekly and monthly magazines from great publishers are processed by this offset printing technique itself.

There are two types of offset printing technique.

  • Sheet-fed offset printing

In this technique individual pages are fed into the machine one by one. The pages are either pre-cut or trimmed after publication
  • Web offset printing

This method involves larger and high equipped machines where pages are fed in rolls and after printing the pages are trimmed accordingly.

Advantages of offset printing include:

  1. High quality and consistency in images
  2. Can be utilized for small, middle level and high volume jobs
  3. Real economical method as it runs long in the estimated time

Today the method of offset printing has changed with the input of three rotating cylinders: which includes plate cylinder, blanket cylinder and an impression cylinder. The moisture plate cylinder comes in contact with ink, where and the ink in the printing area is transferred to the rubber blanket and which is then passed over to the print media rolling over the impression cylinder.
